Dawn Demas, LCMHC
Thanks for stopping by! I am a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor in North Carolina. I believe the therapeutic relationship is the most powerful component in the practice of counseling. Therefore, I strive to create a healing bond with each client in which hurts can be explored and truth can be spoken in love, bringing new insights and valued behavior to life's most difficult seasons. I enjoy working with individual adults and couples around issues such as anxiety, depression, grief, relational problems, trauma, and difficult life transitions.
My regular office hours are 3p-8p Tuesdays and 9a-2p Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Dawn is not accepting new clients at this time.
About My Practice
I am Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (#14077) in state of North Carolina. I earned a Master's Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in 2018. I also hold Bachelor's Degrees in Journalism and Political Science from UNC-Chapel Hill. I have completed a four-day externship and an eight-day Core Skills Training in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy as well as a five-day intensive training in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing.) I am also a certified Prepare-Enrich Facilitator.
I use Person Centered Therapy, Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy approaches primarily. Person Centered Therapy utilizes the relationship between counselor and client to create a safe and accepting environment for growth and change. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy utilizes acceptance of life circumstances and emotional experience along with a commitment to valued behaviors to increase psychological flexibility and thriving in the midst of difficult challenges and life events. Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy seeks to help a couple discover their emotional and behavioral responses as they seek to have their deepest needs for love and security met in the relationship. This experiential approach focuses on helping the couple understand their pattern of interaction and to discover and practice new ways of interacting that promote stronger emotional attachment and improved communication. EMDR is a trauma focused therapy that uses eye movement or other forms of bilateral stimulation to assist in reprocessing memories and addressing negative core beliefs that can come from traumatic experiences.
Counseling Philosophy
I believe that the quality of any counseling relationship is dependent on the warmth, genuineness, and empathy of the counselor as well as on the dedication and openness of the client. I believe that a strong therapeutic relationship allows the client to examine his or her most difficult situations and painful emotions in an environment of safety and acceptance, allowing for the development of new ways of thinking, new insights and new ways of behaving. I believe in a holistic approach that includes emotional, physical, spiritual, relational, and vocational issues as core pieces of the client’s life.
